Weekend Warrior: 4 Common Odors in Your Home

by ServiceMagic on December 16

Every home has encountered long-lasting, hard to identify odors that are just (for a lack of a better word) funky. The smell may be hard to identify, so we’ve identified four common odors to give you a head start when locating the source.

Pet Odors
If Fido loves to roll around on the carpet, you will need to vacuum often, clean diligently, and make sure that any “business” is promptly removed or diffused.

If the odor still lingers, there’s a good chance that it’s embedded in your carpet. Make sure your carpets are professionally cleaned several times a year (or in worst case scenarios, replaced). Since carpet tends to hold onto odor, pet owners should consider tile or wood in areas where pets frequent.

Shower Drain Odors
Some drain odors can simply be eliminated by using a product designed to break up gunk and film on the inside of your plumbing (for instance, Drano) or having the buildup physically removed.

There is also a chance that sewage might be seeping into your piping. If this is the case, you may need to have your sewer line checked or replaced by a plumber.

Mold and Mildew Odors
Have you ever walked into a home and smelled something organic and musty? This smell, often caused by mold or mildew, is usually in a place that cannot be easily seen. Once the source of the odor is located and eliminated, adding a dehumidifier or additional ventilation (as well as fixing any leaks that may have contributed to the growth in the first place) can leave your space smelling wonderfully fresh!

Basement Odor
Basements may smell stale because there is simply not enough circulation. A ventilation system can certainly do the trick, here, but if you have basement windows, an easier solution might be to open them up periodically and air the space out!

If adding additional circulation doesn’t do the trick, you should check your gutters. Clogged gutters and pooling water on your foundation may cause water to seep into your basement (causing mold and mildew odors).
