It seems that with every new step towards modernizing a Kitchen’s layout, it moves closer towards being a central room of the house. Not just as a place for the family unit to eat and spend mornings together, but also as a good central location during social gatherings and parties.

Kitchens for Entertainment

There is something a little ironic and also inherently useful about a party room without a carpet, which is specifically designed to be regularly and easily wiped clean and which is the house’s location to store and serve drinks. Not only do these factors make the “morning after” clear up easier, they also make modernizing and re-styling more worthwhile.

Some items in your kitchen can make all the difference when throwing a smashing shin dig! For example a high top bar styled table can make serving drinks the party’s focal point as well as making it an enjoyable art. It can also be applied well to family life due to its spatial advantages and room for seating a number of people in a small area.

Luscious turf is something many homeowners strive for but very few achieve. If you really want turf that makes your neighbours weep with jealousy then you’ll have to be dedicated to maintaining your lawn on a regular basis. But sometimes even the most passionate gardener’s work can be unravelled by family and pets intent on using the garden for their own fun. If you’re determined to turn your neighbours green with envy at the sight of your grass then here are a few obstacles to look out for which could jeopardise your quest for lawn success.

Playing Recreational Garden Golf

Although playing golf in your own garden seems a fantastic pastime to while away the hours on a sunny day, it’s actually a sure-fire way to undo all your gardening. Golf clubs are well-known for up-rooting pieces of turf mid-swing, which can make your lawn look hideous!
If you’re a real golf enthusiast then it may be worth considering a residential putting green which is specifically designed for garden golfers. Simply invest in some golf equipment and invite your friends round on a sunny day for some friendly competition. That way you have your own private golfing area, accompanied by a beautiful flawless lawn – perfect!

Letting the Dog Loose

Some dogs seem to enjoy nothing more than digging and urinating on grass; whilst this is fine during a walk through a public park, it’s a different story when it’s in your own garden. It can be frustrating when you’ve put so many hours into caring for your lawn, and your dog ruins it all!

If your pooch is far too unruly to be trained then you need to try a different approach. Remember – your dog’s an animal and won’t understand the concept of having a beautiful garden so don’t get too angry at him! Instead, you could try fencing off an area of your garden especially for your dog to use as he pleases. You could always lead him to this area whilst on a leash if he’s reluctant to trample the new turf. This allows you to still work on your luscious lawn but your dog also now has an area to do his businesses in without getting scolded.

Entertaining in your Garden

Although entertaining in your garden can be a fun activity, it’s one that must be approached with care if you don’t want to ruin your lawn. Spilling alcoholic beverages and barbequing food on your turf can cause its appearance and health to suffer.

Everyone breathes a sigh of relief as winter slowly draws to a close along with those long, dark nights. For many people spring symbolizes new beginnings and often inspires them to try something new. As well as lifting your mood and inspiring you to take on new challenges, the Start of Spring is also a great time to partake in some home improvement after months of shying away from the cold. Here are some reasons as to why spring could spell good news for the condition and appearance of your home!

Increased Sunlight and Renewable Energy

The increased hours of daylight means that those using solar PVpanels to power their home will see more financial benefits than they do in the winter. The combination of your solar panels being exposed to an increased amount of sunlight, along with less of a requirement for central heating means increased savings on your energy bills. Wondering what to spend the money on? Some new accessories for the home of course!

Lawn sprinklers are an essential for anyone who takes pride in their luscious green lawn. Although sprinklers systems are generally very effective, from time-to-time they may spring a leak and require repairing. Whilst major leaks will require a professional to fix them, minor leaks can be easily fixed.

A broken sprinkler system can be problematic for a number of reasons: it can be harder to maintain your lawn as you may end up with dry patches where the sprinkler has failed to reach; or flooded patches where pipe has leaked. Either way, you’re going to end up with some rather unsightly turf! Also, leaking sprinklers can waste a great deal of water, which isn’t very environmentally or pocket friendly. As February begins, darkness descends a little later and the dew on the grass smells sweet, as spring is on the horizon. After neglecting it over the winter months, you start to think about venturing into the garden and preparing it for the spring and summer ahead. Now is actually a good time to perform a good old-fashioned spring clean, plant some seeds and start to prepare your garden for many happy days in the upcoming months.

A Thorough Spring Clean

Winter will have left you with a rather big clean up job on your hands as dead leaves and branches are strewn across your turf. One of the first jobs is to rake the lawn and compost the debris. You may notice bare or damaged patches on your lawn, now is a good time to re-seed them for a full, luscious lawn in the summer. Make sure you keep the grass well watered until the patches begin to germinate.

Lawn edges will start to grow ferociously in early spring, make sure you trim them regularly to keep them maintained. Weeds will also start to grow rapidly around this time so weeding regularly, although it’s somewhat of a tedious task, can help you to keep on top of even the keenest of weeds and save you a big job in the future. If you have any topiary or shrubs, make sure you shape them now to get rid of any dead, browning leaves and then regularly trim them to keep them in optimum condition. [click to continue…]

January can be a financially challenging month for many families, with little work available, cold weather resulting in high heating bills and of course, the aftermath of Christmas to contend with. Money is often tight, which in turn means belts must be tightened to cut everyday expenses wherever possible. One of the most common complaints from homeowners is that their energy bills are incredibly expensive. A simple daily checklist can help to prevent energy bills from becoming extortionate.

Thermostat Control

Your heating could be turning on without you even touching your thermostat, in some central heating systems, the heating is programmed to automatically turn on if the temperature hits zero or below. This generally isn’t a problem for homeowners unless their room thermostat’s located somewhere obscure like the garage. If your thermostat is located in a room which doesn’t have a radiator or other heat source, like the garage, it will automatically turn your heating on regardless of the temperature of the rest of your home – this is when you may notice an anomaly in your heating bills.

To get around this problem, turn all your radiators off using their thermostatic radiator control valves, this will prevent them heating the room even if the room thermostat attempts to. [click to continue…]
